Despite the snow, Soprano, Renee Fleming made her Rhode Island debut tonight with the Philharmonic and I was there! What a breathtaking performance. And her gowns - stunning! Before each section of the concert, Ms. Fleming would take the mic and give a small explanation of the songs. One grouping was from Leoncavallo's La Boheme. I was fascinated to find that Leoncavallo was given the libretto to La Boheme first and decided to share it with Puccini. Their operas debuted in the same year and well, if you know opera, you know how it turned out. However, I think I enjoyed the songs Ms. Fleming selected to sing from Leoncavallo, over Puccini. The highlight of the evening for me was Gounod's 'Jewel Song' from Faust. I didn't even need to look at the English translation because her presence and movement on stage while singing it said it all, and I LOVED it. This is one I would definitely like to add to my book! I only wish we could have stayed for the encore, but considering the valet parking situation, I don't blame my husband for wanting to leave. Was anyone there? Did you stay for the encore? And if so, what did she sing?
And, can we please get Renee Fleming and Audra McDonald to share the stage together? That would be absolutely amazing!
